Last Monday was a significant day for the archive group, marking the first practical step towards sharing Metheringham’s digital archives with that of the International Bomber Command Centre (IBCC). Robin Evans of University of Lincoln, digitization partners of IBCC, spent the day training nine archive-group volunteers on the techniques of scanning archive material, editing the images and storing them for easy access using agreed naming protocols.
The training utilised a laptop and A3 scanner, both brand new, provided by the University, on a long-term basis. Future training sessions early in 2019 will include transcription of scanned, written material and the addition of descriptive metadata to scanned items. The attendees thoroughly enjoyed Robin’s excellent training and everyone was keen to get stuck in to learn new IT skills.
The day marked the beginning of an exciting new future for our archives as not only will our digital material be shared with IBCC, but the availability of a word-searchable database will significantly improve the future efficiency of our research team. Many thanks to all the attendees on the day for your enthusiasm!
